Bewildering Bangladesh

1.
Dhaka dreaming
The second time round
Too late for wide-eyed wonder
Too early for nostalgia
3 a.m. in denial
Sheer chaos conflicting
Anticipating for Murphy

A quiet city
Jarring contrast
Where did everyone go
A brand new Kurta
In stink, rot, slums
A saucer-eyed babe perches on
A pot-bellied toddler
Growing up quickly

2.
Row row row
Across the Buriganga
Boats, ships, vessels
Lifeline on the river
Life on the edge

Vegetable peelings
Truckloads of bananas
Onions, onions, so many onions
Cha breaks with Parathas
Men with baskets on heads
Move it move it move it
Hello Bondhu!

3.
Mentally tortured
No comfort from inner demons
Family near yet distant
Quiet, quiet, please be quiet
Go away please
Just some peace

Work, a life of labour
Who needs ABCs for rice
School is a waste of time
When there are endless mouths to feed
Grow up quickly
Before the hunger grows too deep
Life in a living hell

4.
Hope is a powerful antidote to
The poison of poverty
Soon it will get better
It will be easier
We just have to
Keep faith
Hope

It is all in the head
But the mind is weak
No willpower
Just too tired
A constant state of struggle
Battles in the head
