But ours so truly parallel, though infinite can never meet.

I came across this poem while watching an episode of Lark Rise to Candleford (yes, me and my BBC period dramas). Some may write off love poems as cheesy, and I agree that many modern ones are. But I thought this was a beautifully written love poem by 17th century poet Andrew Marvell, so heartbreakingly apt. I hope no one has to ever feel that way, because it sure hurts a hell lot and often there's nothing one can do about it.

The Definition of Love

by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678)

MY Love is of a birth as rare
As 'tis for object strange and high
It was begotten by Despair
Upon Impossibility.

Magnanimous Despair alone
Could show me so divine a thing
Where feeble Hope could ne'r have flown
But vainly flapt its tinsel wing.

And yet I quickly might arrive
Where my extended soul is fixt
But Fate does iron wedges drive,
And always crowds it self betwixt.

For Fate with jealous eye does see
Two perfect Loves; nor lets them close:
Their union would her ruin be,
And her Tyrannic pow'r depose.

And therefore her Decrees of Steel
Us as the distant Poles have plac'd,
(Though Love's whole World on us doth wheel)
Not by themselves to be embrac'd.

Unless the giddy Heaven fall,
And Earth some new Convulsion tear;
And, us to join, the World should all
Be cramp'd into a Planisphere.

As Lines so Loves oblique may well
Themselves in every Angle greet:
But ours so truly Parallel,
Though infinite can never meet.

Therefore the Love which us doth bind
But Fate so enviously debars,
Is the Conjunction of the Mind,
And Opposition of the Stars.

Just indulging my inner romantic poet here so please bear with me.

The comeback queen

What an epic, epic, match that was! I'm glad I dragged myself out of my bed from my flu-medicine induced state to turn on the tv for the match.

For those who can't understand my fascination with Justine Henin's tennis, well you just got to watch her play a match like that and you'll know. She makes normal people like us feel that everything is possible and impossible is nothing. Why I don't really like Federer? Well he's just too "godly", and he makes me feel the exact opposite - that normal people like us can never hope to become great people like him.

I thought Rohit Brijnath wrote a nice commentary on this match on ST today:

Allez Justine and an interesting bit of Hwa Chong history

Back from an interesting trip to China. But down with flu so that kinda sucks. More reflections of China later. In the meantime, I'll be glued to the tv for the next two weeks watching Justine Henin (pronounce Joos-teen Eh-nahn) fight her way through the Aussie Open, on top of trying to juggle my last remaining module and FYP.

While in the Shanghai History Museum last week, I heard a song that was playing in one of the museum exhibits on the Chinese communists that was to the same tune of The Chinese High School song. We had to learn how to sing it when I was in year 2 when TCHS merged with HCJC to become Hwa Chong Institution. I never learnt the full lyrics by heart, since it was written is some ulu classical Chinese that was unpronounceable to my kangtang lips. I always thought it was an ultra-communist sounding song, but I didn't realise the tune wasn't original until last weekend in Shanghai. So I did abit of a research and found that the original melody actually came from the west! And I realised it was also part of Mizzou's school song at one point in time. No wonder they always played that same tune in the quadrangle at Mizzou at least once a day now that I come to think of it. I think the person did a great job here digging up all that history and making this video:

And yes, the school band plays the national anthem and school song everyday during morning assembly. I remember having to endure one year's worth of bad singing from TCHS boys. If there's one thing I can't stand very well, it's off-pitch singing. I can't sing, but at least I know it.

PS: btw, the new American Idol season has started. I've watched the first two episodes and I love how stupid and thick-skinned some Americans can be. But then again, there were some pretty good and unique voices so it should be an interesting season.

The first post in the new decade...

...is dedicated to the past:

The present: Allez Justine!

And to the future: May we have a safe trip in China and not get stuck in any snowstorms.

Welcome to 2010.
